Rowe’s Back Nine 38 Propels Him to First MGA Title

SALISBURY, MD---Mike Rowe left his mediocre play behind when he made the turn during the Lower Shore Chapter’s The MGA, played at Nutters Crossing Golf Club.

Rowe tallied two birdies in his closing five holes to shoot 38 on the back nine, and post an 83 to run away from the field and claim his first Mediocre Golf Association title, by seven shots.

The event – the first played in warm conditions during the season – saw some of the best mediocre play of the year for the chapter. The average score on the day of 95.5 was the lowest by a Lower Shore field this season and Rowe’s 83 was the lowest winning net score.

He tallied one of his birdies on the 14th hole, the closest to the pin hole, sponsored by Black Dog Philanthropic, and capped his round with another on the par-5 18th hole to close out the round in style.

Tim Brennan also birdied the 18th hole, chipping in for a career-best 78, but breaking the 80-shot barrier led to his disqualification from the event. He also claimed the Long Drive win for the event.

Kevin McNelis finished second, putting up the lowest front-nine score of the day (41), coming home with a net 90 including his three penalty strokes for his best MGA finish.

Alex Perry continues to knock on the door of his first individual title, placing third with a net 93, placing third. Having played in all three events this season, he has placed in the top three in each tournament.

Michael Thomason was Most Mediocre, with his net 101 score while Gustavo Rivas earns the chance to advance a set of tee boxes as the next event, as the Key to the Red Tee winner, firing the highest gross score of the day.

Kelly Shannahan suffered the Meltdown Award for the day increasing his score by six shots on the back nine, but finishing fifth with a net 96.

Tyler Mathis had the shot of the day – removing a shoe and stepping into a penalty area to extricate his ball in a splash of mud.

The chapter has a quick turnaround to the F.U. Open on June 15 at Hooper’s Landing.
